Born Dov Ber Rasofsky, Barney Ross grew up in a tough Chicago neighborhood. To survive, he became a petty thief, gambler and errand boy for Al Capone. At 19, he became a professional boxer, joining a generation of Jewish boxers in the 1920s and 30s.
