each year since 1977, the Men’s Club board of directors has established a committee to recommend deserving individuals to receive the Samuel Sacks Achievement Award, which recognizes members of the congregation for their service and support of the Temple. The award is presented each year at the Men’s Club annual meeting, which includes the installation of officers and board members. This year’s recipient is long-time Temple member and two-time past president of the Women’s Auxiliary EVE HABERMAN.

Eve emigrated from Germany with her parents to the United States in 1938. She grew up in Washington Heights, attended the Bronx High School of Science and Hunter College, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science. After graduation, she worked for a government research council in Michigan and later for a financial newspaper on Wall Street.

Eve was a stay-at-home mom for two sons, Jeffrey, now a physician, and Mitchell, a financial planner. (She has five grandchildren, one girl and four boys ranging in ages from 17 to 23.) She and her husband, Maurice (z”ll), joined Temple Emanu-El in 1966 in time for Jeffrey to start at Emanu-El’s Sunday School. Not to be left out, Mitchell started Sunday School the following year. Both were confirmed at Emanu-El.

By the 1970s, Eve became a member of the Women’s Auxiliary. Her first participation was in the “Talking Books” program, and shortly thereafter she was completely committed. She served as president of the Women’s Auxiliary from 1994 to 1998 and again from 2000 to 2004. She started “Project Backpack” here at Temple Emanu-El as well as the Women’s Auxiliary “Book Discussion Group.” Eve has been an active participant in the Sunday Lunch Program, Second Seder, the Readers Panel and Skirball.

Eve’s other significant interests include Hunter College, where she was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2000. She has served on the Hunter College Hillel Foundation Board after having been president of their organization for many years. By the invitation of President Jennifer Raab, Eve serves on her Neighborhood Advisory Committee. Eve has been a mentor to several Hunter College students and interviews applicants for the Macaulay Honors College. Eve currently sits on the Mount Sinai Hospital Community Advisory Board.

Wine and cheese will be served prior to the meeting, and a full reception will follow the award presentation. The charge for this event is $30 per person for Men’s Club and Women’s Auxiliary members, $35 for all others. Make checks payable to the Men’s Club. All Temple members are invited to attend. RSVP by Monday, May 14.
