Our Philanthropic Committee has sent, as a first step, $10,000 in emergency relief through the Catholic Relief Services. We chose this organization as the conduit for this contribution, first, as an expression of interfaith solidarity but, more important, because we felt this would be the most direct way of getting the money to the people who need it. Catholic Relief Services has been operating in Haiti for many years, and its network of contacts is well established.
A catastrophe of this magnitude touches many lives, even in areas distant from the location of the event. Just this morning, we learned that our staff engineer Gerado Gutierrez was able to make contact with his wife’s sister in Haiti and confirmed that she was injured but alive.
Because the scope of the destruction is so vast, relief efforts will require ongoing funding. For those who wish to make their own contributions, we suggest the following organizations that have established programs to collect funds for relief efforts:
Union for Reform Judaism
American Jewish World Service
American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee
American Jewish Committee
B’nai B’rith International

Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti in the wake of this overwhelming disaster.
