Religious School Student Council

t
he Religious School’s Student Council has been meeting since 1965, under the leadership of faculty member Mark Willner. Each Sunday, Monday and Wednesday class in grades 4 through 6 nominates delegates, who serve a one-year term — although several delegates have served more than one term. Delegates meet approximately once a month on selected Sundays, prior to regular class sessions. Although Student Council meetings are held on selected Sunday mornings, we are glad to note that delegates are not just from the Sunday session. Very welcome are those students who are from the Monday and Wednesday sessions, representing their specific constituencies.

The delegates have two primary responsibilites: selecting the recipient organizations for the Religious School’s weekly tzedakah collection (based on the suggestions of their respective classes) and publishing of a newspaper, The Prophet’s Voice. The Student Council, acting as a voice of student opinion, has the major responsibility for the selection of the tzedakah organizations.

For the 2012-2013 school year, the council announced the following as the target organizations to receive tzedakah collections: Yorkville Common Pantry, Meals on Wheels and NATAL. By this May, each organization will have been the recipient of collections over a set period of time. Council members are informed about the recipients and recognize the humanitarian endeavors performed by all of them.
