TORAH CROWNS

New York, 1891

These crowns were presented to Temple Beth-El, which consolidated with Emanu-El in 1927. The donor, Lyman G. Bloomingdale, was a prominent New Yorker and art collector, who served at one time as treasurer of Temple Beth-El and also as treasurer of the Montefiore Hospital. Born in 1841 in New York, Bloomingdale began working with his father as a traveling merchant in the western states. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted in the Kansas Volunteers. After the war he worked with his father in the hoopskirt business, and in 1872, he opened a dry goods store which developed into the present-day Bloomingdale's.

Gift of Lyman G. Bloomingdale, 1891
