Brian and Bianca’s journey at Temple Emanu-El began with a suggestion. They were new to New York City looking to join a temple. Originally from Los Angeles, the couple was unfamiliar with local synagogues. One of Brian’s co-workers suggested they check out Temple Emanu-El. Their journey formally started when Bianca enrolled in conversion classes. Cantor Mo Glazman performed her conversion and married them. A decade later, Temple Emanu-El is still a central part of their family’s life.
“It’s been amazing to build community, to build those friendships and have those evolve over the years,” Bianca said.
Over the years, the Esmonds have been involved in many facets of temple life. They have been active members of the Young Members Circle for years and Brian is a member of the Young Members Circle Board. Through the Young Members Circle, Brian and Bianca have made deep friendships. They have traveled with fellow Young Members Circle participants and celebrated with Young Members Circle friends at their wedding.
In December 2023, Brian and Bianca welcomed daughter Zara. With Zara they enjoy attending Tot Shabbat and Baby Shabbat classes, and playing with other families on the roof.
“In the same way we have made so many amazing friends, our hope for her is that she will also be able to have an amazing array of friends that she is able to meet through the temple as well,” Bianca said.
For Brian and Bianca, Temple Emanu-El has meant community. “What is amazing about Temple Emanu-El, is how engaging it is and how much intent its members have,” Brian said. “Once you are involved, you want to be more and more involved.”
As Temple Emanu-El prepares for its next 180 years, the Brian and Bianca plan on being part of the future. They want to see their daughter grow with the temple. They envision Temple Emanu-El remaining a prominent and influential voice in New York City and national and global Jewry. Most importantly Bianca explained, they hope it remains a warm and welcoming center of Jewish life.
“We hope that for the next 180 years, Temple Emanu-El continues to have the leaders that inspire us in Jewish life and in the broader community as well.”
