Welcome to Temple Emanu-El

If you’re new here, we’re so glad you found us.

Three young Jewish adults in their 20s and 30s share a joyful moment together outside, standing by a brick wall. The woman in the center, dressed in a beige blazer and floral top, smiles warmly at her friends as they engage in conversation.
People come to Temple Emanu-El for many reasons. Some are looking for a place to pray or find community. Others are exploring Judaism for the first time or visiting for a family celebration. Whatever brings you here, we want you to feel comfortable, supported, and welcome.

I’m Visiting for the First Time

We’re glad you’re here. Whether you’re attending a bar or bat mitzvah, a Shabbat service, or simply exploring, you are always welcome at Temple Emanu-El.

What to Expect at Worship Services

  • Worship ervices are open to everyone. You do not need to be Jewish or a member to attend. Please note, however, that membership and tickets are required to attend services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
  • You’ll be greeted when you arrive. If you’re unsure where to go, just ask.
  • There are no assigned seats; sit wherever you feel comfortable.
  • Our prayer books include English translations and transliterations of Hebrew, so you can follow along. You can sing or just listen.

What to Wear to a Synagogue

We suggest business casual attire, though some guests dress more formally for Shabbat or holiday services.

Kippot (yarmulkes or skullcaps) are optional for both men and women. Tallitot (prayer shawls) are also optional and are generally worn only by Jewish adults. Both can be found in the sanctuary lobby.

When attending a life-cycle event (such as a wedding or bar/bat mitzvah), you might dress a bit more formally; think what you would wear to a nice dinner or special occasion.

I’m a New Member and I Want to Get More Involved

Welcome! We’re so glad you’re part of our community. Becoming a member is just the beginning of your journey at Temple Emanu-El.

If you’re looking to deepen your connection, here are some great ways to get involved:

If you’re not sure where to start, we invite you to join us for an upcoming service or event and introduce yourself or send us a note. We’d love to help you find the activities and connections that feel most meaningful to you.

I’m Thinking About Joining

Temple Emanu-El is a large community that feels like a close-knit home. People join us for many reasons: spiritual connection, learning, friendships, social justice work, and more.

As a member, you’ll have access to:

  • Our clergy for life-cycle moments and spiritual support
  • Weekly worship services, holiday celebrations, and special programs
  • Learning opportunities for all ages
  • A network of people who care deeply

We invite you to attend a Shabbat worship service or reach out to our Membership Department for a conversation. There’s no pressure, just an open door.

I’m Attending a Holiday or Life-Cycle Event

Whether you’re here for a bar or bat mitzvah, a baby naming, a wedding, a funeral, or a holiday celebration, we’re here to help make your visit smooth and meaningful.

What to Expect

  • You’ll be greeted when you arrive. Let someone know if you’re new.
  • Our prayer books have translations and transliterations, so you can follow along or just listen and enjoy.
  • You are not expected to know Hebrew or Jewish customs in advance.
  • Food, if served, will be kosher-style (no pork or shellfish, and no meat and dairy on the same plate). A kiddush or oneg is a reception following services, ranging from challah and fruit to a full meal.
  • There is no strict dress code. Business casual to semi-formal is typical for services and celebrations, but you won’t be out of place in jeans and a polo shirt or t-shirt.

If you have any questions or feel unsure, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We want you to feel at ease and included.

I’m Exploring Conversion

We are honored to walk with you on your journey. People explore Judaism for many reasons: connection to Jewish values, family ties, or a desire to join the Jewish people.

Our conversion path includes:

  • Regular meetings with a rabbi
  • A course in Jewish history, holidays, texts, and ethics
  • Participation in worship and community life
  • A conversion ceremony, guided by tradition, including immersion in a mikveh

Begin Your Journey

Before contacting our rabbi to begin your journey, we recommend reading Choosing a Jewish Life, Revised and Updated: A Handbook for People Converting to Judaism and for Their Family and Friends by Anita Diamant as well as learning more about Reform Judaism on ReformJudaism.org.

If you’re interested in pursuing conversion or learning more about the process, please email discoveringjudaism@emanuelnyc.org with your name, contact information and a brief explanation of why you are interested in exploring conversion to Judaism.

You may also choose to explore some additional resources to familiarize yourself with the basics of Judaism and conversion.

You don’t need to know everything to begin; you just need the desire to learn and an open heart.

I’m Not Jewish but I’m Interested

Temple Emanu-El is home to many interfaith families, partners of Jews, parents raising Jewish children, and people who are simply interested in Jewish life.

You are welcome to:

  • Attend services and programs
  • Enroll your children in our nursery school
  • Ask questions and learn without pressure or judgment
  • Be as involved as you feel comfortable

If you’re unsure where to start, we recommend joining us for a Shabbat service or one of our public programs. Or reach out, we would love to meet you.
