Dear Friends,
This afternoon a gunman entered the Chabad Community Center of Poway, California and shot multiple worshipers observing Shabbat and the conclusion of Passover. While at this time the number and extent of the injuries and fatalities remains unclear, our hearts reach out to the entire synagogue community.
When we enter a house of worship we do so believing it a place of safety, spiritually and physically. Our own security procedures are always attuned to potential threats, though we ourselves have received none. We will of course remain vigilant, increasing our security presence in light of this shooting.
Today’s attack outside San Diego, like that at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh, reminds us that anti-Semitism continues to inspire hateful violence. Tomorrow at 2 pm Temple Emanu-El will host New York’s Annual Gathering of Remembrance for victims of the Holocaust. Please join us as we commit to standing together against the anti-Semitism and hate that still stain our world.
