About the Center for Interfaith Dialogue

The Temple Emanu-El Center for Interfaith Dialogue, founded in 2023, is an ongoing initiative that explores the role of religion in our complex world and the evolving presence of faith in contemporary society. While many organizations focus on bringing together clergy, the Center also prioritizes engaging laypeople from diverse faith backgrounds in meaningful conversation and shared learning.

Now in its third year, the Center offers a range of programs that promote understanding across religious lines and mobilize action around pressing social concerns. Our work addresses hate and division through education and coalition-building, turning values into concrete efforts that advance justice and civic responsibility.

Open to people of all faiths and to those with no religious affiliation, the Center serves as a place for learning, reflection and collaboration. Through strong partnerships with religious communities across New York City, we foster mutual respect and long-term relationships rooted in shared purpose.

Unique among New York synagogues, Temple Emanu-El brings together Jewish, Christian and Muslim participants for dialogue, study and worship. These interfaith groups meet monthly in year-long cohorts, exploring topics such as women in religion, social justice, prayer, mindfulness and mysticism. These gatherings offer space for deep conversation and connection.

Our programming continues to grow, with offerings such as meditation retreats, scholarly lectures and interfaith travel to places where religious traditions intersect. Shared meals, including Shabbat and Iftar dinners, help strengthen the relationships built through this work.

The Center for Interfaith Dialogue reflects Temple Emanu-El’s enduring commitment to building bridges and working together across difference. We invite you to be part of this important effort. Every participant helps shape the conversation and moves us closer to a more connected and compassionate society.
