Please find below a list of resources, both articles and videos, to help you begin investigating how systemic racism and institutional white supremacy (see: Ijeoma Oluo’s ‘So You Want to Fight White Supremacy’ below) play out in our lives. The list is curated in order to create easily digestible pieces one can read and return to with ease. Consider starting by creating a practice of taking some time out of each day to read one article or watch one video.
Note that many, if not most, of the authors below have excellent books on these topics as well. This list is a starting point, not an end point, and we, the clergy at Temple Emanu-El, are here always to help continue this conversation. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if we can be of help.

After graduating from Harvard, Bryan Stevenson heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or those not afforded proper representation. One of his first cases is that of Walter McMillian, who is sentenced to die in 1987 for the murder of an 18-year-old girl, despite evidence proving his innocence. In the years that follow, Stevenson encounters racism and legal and political maneuverings as he tirelessly fights for McMillian’s life.

Be’chol Lashon brings the historic Jewish commitment to civil rights and racial justice forward into the 21st century. Embracing the historical diversity of the Jewish people and, more importantly, the growing diversity of the community today is the most important step toward securing relevancy in an exciting American future.
