As a community of faith, we are sickened by the coordinated attacks on the Christian community of Sri Lanka — suicide bombings in multiple Catholic churches and tourist hotels on Easter Sunday. With the hateful violence against worshipers at the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh and two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand still vivid in our memories, our hearts now reach out to the families of the hundreds of dead and wounded gathered in observance of this holiest day of the Christian calendar. While the precise motivations behind these attacks have yet to be made public, an assault on a house of prayer represents an attempt to undermine the hope and security that faith and a faith community can offer, as well as faith’s vision of a more peaceful and just world. As on Passover we recall our own story of liberation from religious persecution, we recommit ourselves to that vision and to speaking out against hate wherever it remains.
In sorrow and solidarity,
Rabbi Joshua M. Davidson
