Make your Purim celebration special with these customs and activities:
Dress Up in Costumes
Why? Because Esther couldn’t reveal her true identity, at first. Once she summoned her courage and revealed her faith, it was she who saved the Jewish people! We dress up to be like our heroes.
Make and Eat Hamantaschen
The triangular shape of Hamantaschen comes from the shape of Haman’s hat! Here are two delicious recipes created by Jennifer Stempel, a food blogger and recipe developer, just for Young Cooks! View the recipes here.
Give Tzedakah
That way, you can help others afford to enjoy the holiday.
Have a festive meal!
Don’t we always celebrate with a wonderful meal?
Share Sweets with Friends
In the book of Esther, after the Jews had been saved, one way they celebrated was by sharing their food and sweets. Think of all the people who have helped you this year and share something sweet with them to acknowledge their kindness.

Read the Story (Book) of Esther:
In the old days, people would keep their ‘books’ rolled on a scroll. We call that a Megillah (or Megillat Esther). Here is a link to the Story of Esther which you can print, tape together, color, and then wrap around a paper towel roll to make into your own scroll! When you read it, remind your children of the custom to BOO when the villain Haman’s name is mentioned. Many people use a noisemaker (a Gragger) to drown out Haman’s name. This is the perfect time to tell your kids you can’t hear them so they need to shout louder!
- You can also add your own motifs: Yell, “YAY” — or cheer — or clap — when Mordechai and Esther’s names are read! Have some fun!
- Be sure to talk to your kids about being BRAVE or COURAGEOUS!
- Tell them your family stories of times you or their grandparents were brave.
- Tell them why you are PROUD to be Jewish or live in a Jewish household!
- Tell them why you are HAPPY with who they are!
Make a Gragger
Take any unbreakable jar or water bottle. Fill it with rice or dried beans. Seal it so the contents do not become a choking hazard. Shake it and make some noise! (Haman who?)
