Faces of Emanu-El: Sophia S.

A woman with long curly hair smiles warmly in front of a vibrant mosaic at Temple Emanu-El in New York City.

Meet Sophia S., a High Holy Days volunteer and Shabbat greeter. Sophia strives to make congregants, guests and newcomers feel valued and special the moment they enter Temple Emanu-El.

Read below for more of Sophia’s thoughts on how serving Temple Emanu-El has helped her find a home in New York City.

“Being a High Holy Days volunteer and Shabbat greeter has helped me integrate into the community and build a home in New York. In a city as big as New York, being able to have a community where you feel at home and where you know people is very special.

“For transplants to New York, being a High Holy Days volunteer is a lovely way to create High Holy Days traditions in New York City and in your temple community. I encourage young people to try it out!”
