Friday Evening Worship Service: The Resurgence of Jewish Life in Prague with special guest Rabbi David Maxa

Welcome to Temple Emanu-El. Whether near or far, we would be honored if you would stand with our congregation and celebrate Shabbat with us. Services are every Friday at 6:00 PM and Saturday at 10:30 AM. All Shabbat and Holiday services are livestreamed on our website, Facebook, and YouTube.

We are delighted to welcome Rabbi David Maxa, the co-founder and Rabbi of the Progressive Jewish Community Ec chajim in Prague. Rabbi Maxa will be speaking about the resurgence of Jewish life in Prague.

Rabbi David Maxa (1990) was born just after the fall of communism in Czechoslovakia. The son of a Holocaust survivor, the known opera soloist Hynek Maxa, and the great grandnephew of Rabbi Adolf Mellion, a pre-war Czech Reform Rabbi, Rabbi Maxa carries a deep personal commitment to memory, resilience and renewal.

After completing his studies and receiving rabbinic ordination in 2020, Rabbi Maxa returned to the Czech Republic, marking a historic milestone as the first full-time Reform rabbi to serve in the country since World War II. He has since led the Progressive Jewish Community Ec chajim in Prague, which he co-founded in 2019. Under his leadership, the community has grown from its founding members to more than 250, becoming a vibrant center of Jewish life that continues to expand quickly.

Rabbi Maxa is an active member of both the European Rabbinic Assembly (ERA) of the European Union for Progressive Judaism and the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR). He is also a proud member of the ROI Community, a prestigious global network of innovative Jewish leaders established by the Schusterman Family Philanthropies.

Rabbi Maxa is married to Judita Bergmann, and together they are raising two small children, Rafael and Serafina. Learn more at www.rabbidavidmaxa.com and www.ecchajim.cz.
